Nucor Site

Nucor is in the construction phase of a $750 million direct reduced iron (DRI) facility at a site in Convent, Louisiana, The 4,000-acre site has over a mile of river frontage. Nucor plans to hire 150 teammates by the end of 2012. Initially, Nucor will build one DRI plant, but has been permitted for the construction and operation of two plants with a combined annual direct reduced iron (DRI) production of 5,500,000 tons. The project will create a substantial number of quality jobs. The project’s first phase will create 150 permanent Nucor jobs that earn an average annual salary of $75,000, plus benefits. During peak construction, 500 jobs will be directly created. If the additional phases of the project are constructed, over time Nucor could have a total investment of over $3 billion and increase permanent employment to more than 1,000. To date the company has invested over $50 million to acquire the property on the Mississippi River for the facility.

It is Nucor's intent to hire not just from St. James, but from surrounding parishes as well. Nucor will teach new employees the ins and outs of steelmaking and specifically what it takes to make a high-output DRI facility successful. The vast majority of Nucor's teammates at all of its facilities come from the surrounding communities.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Nucor and affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada.
